Officer Succumbs to Injuries From Car Accident

Officer Scott Hewell, a 33-year-old Stockton police officer, died Wednesday just weeks after being seriously injured in a car crash while on duty on May 28.

He was pronounced dead at UC Davis Medical center Wednesday morning. He joined the department in September 2012.

The car Hewell was riding in veered off the road and struck a tree. Hewell and another officer, who was driving at the time of the accident, were heading to aid an officer who had stopped a subject who was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

“Any time a law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty, that is tragic, but when it is one of your own that’s unbelievable,” Stockton Police Chief Eric Jones said in a statement. “Right now, our department is grieving and in a state of shock.”

On June 6, Hewell was released from the hospital, but was rushed back Wednesday. The cause of death is unknown. That crash is still under investigation and no charges have been filed. The officer driving the vehicle at the time of the crash has returned to duty.

“Anne and I are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Stockton Police Officer Scott Hewell,” Gov. Jerry Brown said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with his friends, family and the entire law enforcement community during this difficult time.”
