A dangerous three vehicle accident killed one and forced the closure of Pacific Coast Highway for almost eight hours Saturday morning in Malibu.

The accident was reported to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at about 8:10 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the coastal highway, where an eastbound vehicle crossed over the center median and crashed head on into a another vehicle heading the opposite direction.

That vehicle then spun out of control and struck another westbound vehicle in an S-curve of the highway, just east of the Los Angeles County fire battalion headquarters at Carbon Canyon Road. Firefighters were able to provide assistance on the scene quickly.

A young passenger in the westbound vehicle struck in the head on collision was killed in the crash, and the driver of the vehicle was seriously injured. There is no word on the condition of the other two drivers, or of any other occupants who may have been on board.

The crash, which spilled debris across lanes in both directions, forced the closure of Pacific Coast Highway for several hours to allow for crews to clear away the mangled vehicles and for police investigators to uncover what may have caused the eastbound vehicle to swerve into oncoming lanes. All lanes were finally reopened just after 4 p.m., almost eight hours after the crash took place.

On a narrow and winding highway like PCH, it is vitally important to stay focused on the road ahead and obey the posted speed limits. The numerous peaks and valleys throughout the highway create blind turns and corners, and the possibility for an accident if a vehicle temporarily drifts into oncoming lanes.
