A bus driver from the Orange County Transportation Authority was serious injured after a crash involving a suspected drunk driver early Friday morning in Santa Ana.
According to local police reports, the crash took place at about 6 a.m. in the 200 block of northbound North Harbor Boulevard near First Street, where the female bus driver was struck head on by a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV which had veered into her lane.
Her Toyota Prius was almost completely destroyed in the accident; very little was left over to remind anyone that the pile of twisted metal had once been an environmentally friendly hybrid vehicle.
The woman had to be cut out of the wreckage, at which time she was transported to a nearby trauma center for the treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the SUV, an unidentified male, was detained on the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence, and was booked in a Santa Ana jail.
The Prius involved in the accident was an OCTA agency vehicle, which bus drivers sometimes use to shuttle themselves between different routes. According to a spokesman from the transportation authority, it was unknown where the woman was heading at the time of the accident.
The crash forced the closed of all northbound lanes of Harbor Boulevard in the immediate area for multiple hours as crews dragged the remnants of the vehicle from the scene and police investigators looked over the scene to gain a better understand of the circumstances of the crash.
Accidents like this continue to demonstrate the dangers of drunk driving for other motorists on the road. Driving under the influence of alcohol not only endangers yourself, but those on the road with you, potentially putting them in seriously dangerous positions, and even fatal accidents.
