Out of Control Vehicle Hits Tree, Two Killed

Two men were killed when their pickup truck lost control and smashed into a tree along Interstate 8 Thursday morning in the Alpine area.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the two men were traveling down the westbound lanes of the freeway near East Victoria Drive just after 11 a.m. at about 70 miles per hour when the silver Ford Ranger pickup truck suddenly veered off the road for unknown reasons.

After swerving off the road entirely, the truck smashed into a large oak tree and came to rest on its roof. Both the driver and the passenger inside were pronounced dead when accident responders made it to the scene.

An initial investigation into the crash has revealed that they two men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, and that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The truck itself was entirely destroyed in the accident. The roof was entirely collapsed in and the front cab portion was reduced to an almost unrecognizable heap of scrap metal.

The identities of the two men have yet to be released, as the county coroner’s office is still working to locate and notify their next of kin.

The accident forced the momentary closure of the right hand lane as crews worked to clear the debris from the accident and police conducted a more thorough investigation into the causes of the crash. All lanes were reopened after a relatively short time.

A resident living close by the accident site noted that rain had started to fall shortly before the time of the accident, which could have contributed to the loss of control.
