An out of control truck caused a three vehicle accident that injured a woman and her three kids Wednesday night in San Diego.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the chaos began at 9:30 p.m. on the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway near 28th Street in Grant Hill as a truck bound for Mexico lost control and rolled after being cut off by another motorist.

The truck then bounded into the slow lane in the path of a van carrying the woman and her family, which included a young child in a car seat. The van swerved to avoid the truck, but was rear ended at a high speed by an oncoming silver sports car.

The impact collapsed the rear end of the van, completely destroying the left rear corner and turning the bumper into an accordion. The right front side of the sports car, an Acura RSX, was smashed in, causing serious damage to the engine of the vehicle.

Paramedics were called to the scene, where they treated the occupants of the van, who had managed to escape with only minor injuries. They were treated and released from the scene as family members arrived to take them home. The drivers of the other two vehicles were not hurt in the accident.

Multiple lanes of the freeway were closed down as crews worked to clean the wreckage from the road. The truck, which came to rest on its side, was tipped back onto its wheel and dragged off, along with the incapacitated van and sports car.

The vehicle that cut off the truck and started the whole debacle made no effort to stop, instead driving off into the night. At this time there is no description of the vehicle available, and it is unlikely that the driver will be punished for the dangerous maneuver.

It is important to understand your place on crowded freeways. Making quick and dangerous lane changes can create hazardous situations, and lead to accidents that can take lives. The family in the van was lucky to escape serious injury, and could have easily found themselves in the hospital, clinging to life in critical condition.
