Suspected Drunk Driver Slams Taco Truck

A police chase with a suspected drunk driver came to an abrupt and deadly end after a collision with a taco truck Saturday night in Boyle Heights.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the chaos began as officers spotted a grey Toyota Camry speeding and swerving across lanes on the northbound side of the 5 Freeway near Fourth Street at around 11 p.m.

The officer made an attempt to pull the vehicle over, which the female driver promptly ignored. Instead, she pulled off the freeway at Cesar Chavez Avenue, ran through a red light into a parking lot, where she crashed into a taco truck with a crowd of people around it.

The resulting collision killed two patrons standing near the food truck: an unidentified 38 year old woman, and 19 year old Marlene Alatorre, who leaves behind a one year old baby.

“[The driver] came off the freeway and hit my daughter and tore her apart,” said Alatorre’s mother. “They can’t let me see her because she’s in pieces.”

Two others inside the taco truck, a man and a pregnant woman, were seriously injured and taken to L.A. County Medical Center for treatment.

The driver of the Camry suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Upon her release, she was arrested on charges of suspicion of drunk driving, and will face multiple felony charges for her deadly actions.
