Oakland Hit-and-Run Leaves Former Professor Dead Near Lake Merritt
OAKLAND, CA (February 3, 2025) – Retired UC Berkeley sociology professor Michael Burawoy was fatally struck in a hit-and-run crash Monday evening near Lake Merritt, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly before 7:15 p.m. at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Park View Terrace. According to the Oakland Police Department, Burawoy, 77, was walking in a marked crosswalk when a black SUV traveling west on Grand Avenue hit him and fled the scene.
Authorities Transported Michael Burawoy To a Nearby Hospital Where He Died
Emergency responders transported Burawoy to a local hospital, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead when he got there.
Burawoy was a longtime Oakland resident and an esteemed academic, having taught sociology at UC Berkeley for nearly 50 years. He also served as president of both the American Sociological Association and the International Sociological Association.
Oakland Authorities Report That The Suspect Remains At Large
As of Wednesday, the suspect remains at large. Authorities have not determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
