5 Freeway Reopens After Fatal Crash

The northbound lanes of the I-5 Freeway in East Los Angeles reopened after an early morning fatal crash. All the lanes were originally closed. The car slammed into a cement pillar, causing construction equipment to fall on the vehicle. One person was killed while the other was critically injured.

Jose Antonio Garcia, 34 of Compton, was traveling on the 5 Freeway north of Atlantic Boulevard when his red unidentified sedan crashed around 2 a.m. Garcia was killed in the fatal crash.

It took until 8:15 p.m. for all the lanes on the northbound I-5 Freeway, Atlantic Boulevard and southbound 710 Freeway to be opened according to the California Highway Patrol. According to the California Highway Patrol, the integrity of the bridge had been compromised.

The male passenger in the vehicle had to be extricated. He was transported to a local hospital with major injuries. He was last known to be in stable condition.

The man injured had not been identified by authorities. The fatal crash is under investigation. It is not clear if drugs or alcohol may have been factors in the crash.
