One man was killed and a mother and her teenaged daughter injured after a failed overtaking maneuver led to a head on collision early Monday morning in Sacramento.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Jasper Begay, the crash took place at approximately 3:42 a.m. on Jackson Highway just west of Eagles Nest Road, where a man in a 2003 Nissan 300ZX attempted to overtake a slower moving vehicle by crossing into oncoming lanes.

As the Nissan crossed into the eastbound lanes however, it collided head on with a 1997 Honda Accord, carrying a mother and her 13 year old daughter. The driver of the Nissan, 49 year old Plymouth resident John D. Bernet, was killed in the impact. Officer Begay said that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The woman in the Accord, 37 year old Mary J. Kelly of Pine Grove, suffered major injuries and was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment. Her daughter, who remains unidentified, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital as well. The two were both reportedly properly belted in during the accident.

The two vehicles suffered largely irreversible damage as a result of the crash, with the entirely of the front ends of both cars becoming completely unrecognizable. Jackson Highway was closed down in both directions for more than two and a half hours as crews worked to clear the away the debris left by the two piles of twisted metal. All lanes were reopened before the morning commute had set in.

Sacramento Police believe that the crash, which is still being investigated, was largely a culmination of high speeds and fog. At this time it is unclear if alcohol was a contributing factor as well.
