A six year old boy was killed and his grandmother critically injured when a pickup truck struck the two while walking to school Monday morning in Santa Ana.

According to the Santa Ana Police Department, the accident took place at approximately 7:40 a.m. in the intersection of Ramona Drive and Central Avenue, where Alan Martinez, his seven year old sister Mia, and their grandmother, who has not been identified, were struck in a crosswalk by a Ford F250 pickup truck.

The seventeen year old driver of the truck stopped after the collision and remained at the scene. He told police that he was driving his thirteen year old brother to Douglas MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School at the time of the accident. He did not receive a citation and was released after questioning.

Speed was not a factor in the crash, says police corporal Anthony Bertagna. “The speed was not all that fast, but he did hit both the grandmother and the six year old.” The teenaged driver and his younger brother were unhurt in the crash, as was Alan’s sister, who was traumatized by the accident. “She was just hysterical, seeing her grandmother and her brother just lying there, not moving,” said Franco Del Rio, who lives across the street from the accident site.

Alan was rushed to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with major head trauma but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. His grandmother suffered a broken arm and minor head trauma as well, and is currently listed in critical condition.

As a driver, it is essential to make certain that pedestrian crossings are clear around school zones. Younger pedestrians can be easily overlooked with a quick glance. Even with the legal right of way, it is important to drive with caution, as a collision with a young person on foot could inflict major and life threatening injuries.

If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident as a pedestrian such as this, you should seek help. Depending on the circumstances that surround your incident, you may be entitled to compensation from those at fault to help cover the cost of your injuries, including doctor visits, surgeries, physical therapy, pain and suffering, and more. You could even recover wages lost from time spend away from work, or from a loss of future earning potential.

At AA Accident Attorneys, we know your rights and will fight to get you the full amount that you rightfully deserve. We can guide you through the entire process, connect you with medical professionals trained to treat your specific injuries, and even provide financial support should your injuries prevent you from returning to work during your recovery.
