Woman, Young Child Killed in Bus Stop Accident

A woman and a young child were killed, and two others injured, when a car jumped the curb and crashed into a bus bench near a major shopping center last Friday afternoon in Riverside.

According to local accident reports, the crash took place just after 1 p.m. in front of the West Plaza Shopping Center on Magnolia Avenue where a man lost control of his vehicle, swerved across three lanes, jumped up the curb and struck the four people waiting for the bus.

A 28 year old woman from Riverside and a 7 year old child from Corona were pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. More information about the two will be released as the county coroner’s office notifies their next of kin.

Two others, a 31 year old man from Riverside and a 30 year old woman from Corona whom police say were related to the young girl suffered serious injuries as well. They were transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the bus stop, a 45 year old man from Riverside, was treated on the scene for minor injuries and taken to the Riverside Police Department for further questioning. No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the crash.

At this time there is little information about what may have caused the vehicle to lose control. Local authorities have said that they will conduct a thorough investigation to determine what took place and doll out the appropriate punishments if deemed necessary.
