The news story says the accident, which occurred on April 30, 2012 around 8:25 p.m., began when a Eureka Police Officer saw a 1999 Chevy Silverado fail to stop for a posted stop sign at Hawthorne and Fairfield Street. The driver of the vehicle was 27-year-old Brooke Danna Hames of Eureka, the story in The Arcata Eye says.

The officer pulled the Silverado over for a traffic stop, and Hames pulled to the shoulder on Broadway in front of a bowling alley. The story in The Arcata Eye states that a male and female who were passengers in the Silverado exited and fled on foot. As the officer approached the rear of the Silverado, Hames is reported to have sped away, the press release says.

According to the report, Hames continued on Broadway heading southbound, at times going faster than 90 miles per hour with the officer pursuing her. When Hames approached the north entrance intersection of the Bayshore Mall, the story says, she swerved and lost control of the vehicle. The Silverado she was driving then continued backwards into the northbound #1 lane, and it collided with a 2004 Chevy Venture that had been traveling at 35 miles per hour. Joseph Dalton Chisholm of Arcata was driving the Venture.

Danielle Nicole Weaver of Arcata suffered fatal injuries from the impact of the crash. J. Chisholm and two other passengers, Gary E. Chisholm and 13-month-old Anabele G. Chisholm, also of Arcata, suffered minor to major injuries, according to the story in The Arcata Eye. Responders took the victims to St. Joseph Hospital.

Hames is reported to have fled the scene on foot, but officers apprehended her a short distance away. She was charged with violations in connection with the accident.

California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
