The front wheel of one of the vehicles was unattached from the impact of the crash and lay separate from the accident site.

Witnesses called in to report the crash at about 5 a.m., according to Sgt. Brian Green of the Tustin Police Department.

Police Officers attempted to treat the woman’s injuries until paramedics arrived, but she showed no signs of life. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken to the hospital where she later died from her extensive injuries.

The California Highway Patrol shut down the southbound exit of the 5 freeway for the investigation. The exit was closed until 10 a.m.
