A trash truck in Westminster hit and killed a pedestrian Thursday afternoon, December 29, 2011, according to an Orange County Fire Authority official, the Los Angeles Times reports.  The accident occurred around 1:15 p.m. at 9021 Madison Avenue in a residential neighborhood. Witnesses told police that a trash truck hit a woman who appeared to be in her 40s.

Responders took the victim to the hospital where she died. Captain Marc Stone said the woman wasn’t in a crosswalk, the Times’ reports. Witnesses told police that the victim, Betty Dietz, had been trying to flag down the garbage collector. She was standing in a cul-de-sac in the 9000 block of Madison Avenue, near her house. According to the news story, she may have forgotten to put her trashcan out. She stepped in the street, and the garbage truck accidentally ran over her, investigators stated. The driver didn’t see her, and stopped his truck after he heard the sound of her body as it was crushed under the vehicle, witnesses said.

Westminster Police Det. Alan Aoki said it appeared to be a horrible accident, and nothing criminal.
