Sorrento Valley, CA (August 23, 2018) – 3 people are dead and 1 left in serious condition following a fiery wrong-way collision on the 805 Freeway near Sorrento Valley Thursday afternoon, August 23rd. California Highway Patrol officers were summoned to respond to a report of a fiery collision near La Jolla Village Drive and Miramar Road around 4:30 p.m. A witness told CHP officers that the collision was caused by a driver in a black vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Corvette or Lamborghini, who was speeding the wrong-way in a carpool lane. The black vehicle was traveling more than 100 mph when it collided head-on with another vehicle. CHP officers said that a motorcyclist appeared to also be involved and that 2 vehicles were reported on fire. 3 people were reported to be dead by first responders with another person suffering serious injuries but that person is expected to survive.

All northbound lanes were blocked for about 6 hours. Northbound traffic was diverted off the freeway at the La Jolla Village Drive exit until 2 right lanes were reopened around 10:30 p.m. The collision halted rush-hour traffic south of where both Interstates 5 and 805 meet in an area referred by locals as the “Golden Triangle.” Large debris from the crash ended up in southbound lanes of the freeway. Cleaning crews worked through the evening and all traffic was freed up around 12 a.m.
