SAN DIEGO, CA (September 23, 2022) – Early in the morning on Thursday in San Diego, a pedestrian walking on I-5 in downtown was struck and killed. The September 22 crash occurred on the northbound side of the freeway, near Hawthorn Street and to the south of it.

The time was roughly 6:00 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities said the pedestrian had been walking on the freeway and a vehicle–described as a Kia SUV–struck him.

Responders transported the person to a hospital in the area.

He died in the hospital, according to Jesse Matias. Matias is a public information officer with the California Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian was identified only as 23 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.

The Kia’s driver stayed at the crash site and cooperated with the investigation.

The driver was identified only as 28 years old. Reports do not state his name and city of residence.

The crash is being examined by investigators, who are continuing to collect details and information in order to understand it.
