Police are on the lookout for a driver who collided with a man attempting to cross the street early Monday morning in the Crenshaw District.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division, the collision took place in the 4700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where a 37 year old Hispanic male was attempting to make his way across the street in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by an SUV that then fled the scene. The man, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics. More information is set to be released after the county coroner’s office has notified his next of kin.

Investigators at the crash site were able to determine the make and model of the vehicle involved, a champagne colored 1999 or 2000 Land Rover Discovery, by debris scattered in the road. The LAPD is now asking for the public’s help to find the vehicle, which should now feature significant front end damage. Details about the driver of the SUV were not available. Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest of the hit and run driver is being asked to contact the LAPD as soon as possible to assist in the investigation.

The deadly crash comes just a week after the US Department of Transportation announced a new program designed to improve pedestrian safety in several large cities throughout the country, including Los Angeles. While overall traffic fatalities continue to drop, pedestrian deaths are on the rise, up 8% since 2009. Most of these accidents, more than 70% according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, occur at night. Many also include the influence of alcohol.

If you or someone you know has been injured as a pedestrian, you should seek help, as there are legal protections in place designed to get victims what they need to recover. Depending on the circumstances of your accident, you may be entitled to compensation from those at fault to pay for things like hospital visits or surgeries, and even replace wages lost from time spent away from work. With the help of an experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer, you can receive the full amount that you deserve.
