One person was killed and two others injured, including one critically, in a solo vehicle rollover accident on state Route 163 Saturday evening in San Diego.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place just after 6:00 p.m. on Route 163’s southbound transition onto westbound state Route 52, where a 2008 Scion sedan failed to negotiate the turn, lost control, and rolled down an embankment before finally coming to rest on its roof.

“The driver could not safely negotiate the right hand curve on the transition road,” said CHP Officer J. Knight. “The vehicle veered to the right, went up a dirt embankment, and began to spin around as the driver over corrected the steering back to the left. The vehicle came back down the embankment onto the roadway and began to overturn an unknown number of times.”

“Two of the occupants were ejected from the vehicle,” Knight added. “One of the occupants sustained fatal injuries and a second occupant sustained major injuries. The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Both the 24 year old female driver who suffered critical injuries and the 27 year old man from San Diego who was killed were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. A 23 year old passenger who was properly buckled in place suffered only minor injuries.

Following the accident, the CHP closed down the highway transition as fire crews removed the overturned vehicle from lanes, and police inspected the scene to determine what may have cause the vehicle to lose control. At this time, it is unclear how fast the vehicle was traveling when it entered the transition road.

When driving or riding as a passenger in a vehicle, it is essential to wear a seat belt at all times. Not only are seat belts a legal requirement, they provide essential protection in the event of an accident by reducing the forces of secondary impacts like hitting your head against interior components of a vehicle, and by keeping you positioned correctly to be maximally cushioned by air bags. Seat belts also keep occupants firmly in their place, preventing them from being thrown from a vehicle during a roll.
