At least 17 people were hurt after an accident between a dump truck, an MTA bus, and a sedan early Tuesday morning in Hollywood.

The crash was reported just after 8 a.m. in the 7800 block of Hollywood Boulevard between Stanley and Courtney avenues, where police say a dump truck with no one on board began rolling into the road after its brakes went out. Witnesses had initially reported that it appeared the truck had been driven out onto the road.

After drifting into active lanes, it struck MTA bus 780, which was heading westbound on Hollywood on route from Pasadena City College to the intersection of Fairfax and Washington. The impact then sent the bus crashing head-on into a BMW sedan coming from the opposite direction.

There were two people on board the BMW at the time of the accident, a 10 year old girl who was able to exit the vehicle on her own, and a woman driver who needed to be cut out of the vehicle by responding firefighters. The majority of the front end of the vehicle was wedged underneath the much larger bus.

“It was quite a technical extrication requiring not just our fire companies, but also our urban search and rescue rig and our heavy rescue,” said LAPD Battalion Chief Wes Elder.

The young girl was transported to nearby Children’s Hospital, and the driver was rushed to Cedars-Sinai in serious but stable condition.

At least 15 people on board the MTA bus were also hurt and taken to area hospitals, though none suffered serious injuries. At the time of the accident there were about two dozen passengers on board.

The crash forced the closure of Hollywood Boulevard between Curson and Genessee avenues to allow for crews to clear away the wreckage and police investigators to gain a greater understanding of the circumstances that led to the accident.
