2 Boys Killed in Illegal Street Race in Riverside County

The Riverside County Coroner’s office has released the identity of 2 young boys who were killed as a result of a 2-vehicle collision that involved illegal street-racing in Mead Valley in southwest Riverside County Tuesday afternoon, May 15th. 6-year old Dominic Gonzalez and 8-year old Antonio “Tony” Gonzalez, who both lived in Perris, died from major head trauma sustained in the collision. The incident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. when 2 vehicles, a blue Honda Accord and a black Nissan Altima, that were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Oakwood Road and Brown Street began to race each other according to California Highway Patrol. The driver of the Honda Accord was traveling against traffic on Oakwood Road as the driver of the Nissan Altima was traveling with traffic. As both vehicles came to the crest in the road, the Honda Accord collided head-on with a Nissan Versa carrying the two boys along with 1 adult driver who was later identified as an older brother to 1 of the boys who had just picked up the boys from their elementary school minutes prior to the fatal collision. All 3 occupants of the Nissan Versa were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where both boys were later pronounced dead by medical staff. The older adult brother was treated for minor injuries and later released.

The driver of the Honda Accord sustained moderate injuries and was also transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated and later discharged into the Riverside County Sheriffs custody where he will be facing felony vehicular manslaughter charges. The driver of the Nissan Altima, that had taken part in the illegal street-racing, fled the scene according to California Highway Patrol officer Dan Olivas. CHP officials are asking for the public’s help in finding the driver of the Nissan Altima. “Anyone with information regarding this collision or the location of the driver of the Nissan Altima; is asked to contact the Riverside California Highway Patrol Accident Investigation Unit, at (951) 637-8000,” Olivas said.
