A woman who is believed to have been kidnapped today died as a result of fatal injuries she sustained when the driver of her SUV collided with another car while fleeing police pursuit.
According to officials, and as reported by the Los Angeles Times, patrol officers heard a call a little after 8:00 a.m. notifying them of a kidnapping in progress. The officers saw a GMC Yukon that resembled the description of the vehicle that had been reported in connection with the kidnapping. Officers saw a man driving the SUV near the intersection of 6th Street and Westlake Avenue in Westlake, LAPD Cmdr. Andy Smith said, according to the Times.
The Times explains that as the police officers followed the SUV, they saw a woman in the vehicle waving paper at other people in their cars. The police pursued the SUV, which came to a halt blocks away when the SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a Volvo at the intersection of 6th Street and Bixel Street.
The woman in the SUV suffered critical injuries as a result of the collision. She died later at a nearby hospital. The female victim was not identified immediately.
The driver of the other vehicle, the Volvo, suffered a broken bone and was treated at the hospital.
According to the Times, the driver of the SUV who is suspected as a kidnapper, was arrested by police at the scene of the accident. Police said they think there may have been some sort of relationship between the suspected kidnapper and the kidnapped woman, but they had no details.
