Lane Change Causes Three Car Crash, Hospitalizes Two

Two drivers are recovering in an Orange County hospital after a dangerous road maneuver started a three car crash Tuesday afternoon in Fullerton.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Jason Sanchez, the crash took place just after 12:40 p.m. on the Nutwood Avenue off-ramp of the 57 Freeway, where a Ford Mustang made a blind lane change, sideswiping a Honda Accord.

Both vehicles severed to the right shoulder of the freeway, where they then ran into a Chrysler PT Cruiser. The impacts of the multistage accident sent the PT Cruiser and Accord off the road, hitting a tree and a patch of planted area. The Mustang came to rest along the shoulder.

Firefighters from the Fullerton and Brea Fire Department were called to the scene to remove the driver of the PT Cruiser from the vehicle. It took almost a half an hour to finally remove the female driver from the vehicle, which was all but destroyed in the impact with the tree.

She, along with the driver of the Accord, was immediately taken to UCI Medical center for treatment of what is being classified as moderate injuries. The driver of the Mustang was not hurt in the ordeal, and refused any form of medical treatment at the scene of the accident.

Authorities closed down the off-ramp for almost two hours as the debris from the three vehicles was cleared away and investigators looked into the cause of the crash.

At this time, it is not immediately clear whether or not the driver of the Mustang has been charged with a crime. Police will wait until a full investigation into the accident is complete before dolling out the proper punishment.
