Irvine, CA (August 23, 2018) – A 25-year old woman was killed during a chain-reaction collision that left 9 others injured including 3 children on the 5 Freeway in Irvine early Thursday morning, August 23rd. Orange County Coroner’s Office released the identity of that 25-year old woman as Maria Osuna of National City( a small community just outside of San Diego). According to California Highway Patrol, a 22-year old Nevada man was identified as the suspect responsible for causing the fatal chain-reaction pile up. He was identified as Irving Aguilar-Calixto. Aguilar-Calixto is suspected of driving under the influence and driving an illegally modified Dodge Challenger traveling more than 100 mph along the 5 Freeway’s southbound lanes. Aguilar-Calixto crashed his Dodge Challenger into the back of a Prius that was being driven by an Uber driver who did not have a passenger. Along the stretch of freeway that the initial collision occurred is a remote dark section of freeway with no overhead lights for driver. Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Tony Bommarito said that as driver attempted to avoid the Dodge Challenger and the Prius, a 2nd collision occurred near the Alton Parkway exit involving Osuna and another driver which began the 9 vehicle involved chain reaction pileup.

Firefighters on scene described multiple victims including 3 children ages 6 months, 10-years old, and 11-years old. CHP Officer Florentino Olivera said, “The lead car in the second crash involved Osuna, who had her 6-month old baby in the car with her. What we believed happened from witnesses, is she undid her seat belt, she was reaching from the back to get her child and she was hit again. And that’s what caused her to sustain those injuries.” Osuna was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Osuna’s 6-month-old baby boy traveling with her was taken to a hospital, and was in critical condition. The baby had been found inside his car seat with his seat belt attached. 8 other victims, including the remaining 2 children, were transported to trauma centers where they were treated for minor to moderate injuries sustained during the pileup. All are expected to survive.
