Head-On DUI Collision Injures Four

A total of four people were injured after a suspected drunk driver drifted into oncoming lanes on state Route 76 and crashed head on into another vehicle Wednesday night in San Diego.

According to accident reports from the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place at about 8:50 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway near Rice Canyon Road and the Pala Indian Reservation, where 24 year old Hesperia resident Robert Gresham, originally heading east, smashed his Toyota Tacoma pickup truck into a Mercedes E350 sedan.

Both Gresham and the driver of the Mercedes, a 48 year old male San Diego native, were seriously injured in the collision, and the front seat passengers in both vehicles were also moderately hurt. All four were taken to nearby Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for treatment.

Police reports indicate that both front seat passengers were male, though their ages or places of residence have not yet been released by police.

The crash forced the closure of state Route 76 for multiple hours as the debris from the crash was cleared from active lanes, and to allow for police investigators to look into the cause of the crash. Though nothing has been confirmed at this time, it is believed that the influence of alcohol drove Gresham to drift into oncoming lanes.

Though both front seat passengers are expected to make a full recovery, the two drivers face a much more challenging battle, again highlighting the life threatening impact of driving under the influence of alcohol.
