Gaviota Rollover Crash on Highway 101 Injures Five People

GAVIOTA, CA (January 19, 2022) – On Monday afternoon near Gaviota, a vehicle crashed and overturned, injuring five people. The January 17 crash occurred on Highway 101 where the Gaviota tunnel is located.

The time was roughly 4:30 p.m., according to Santa Barbara County Fire.

A vehicle–described only as an SUV–had been traveling northbound on the roadway. For reasons that are not known, the vehicle crashed and overturned, rolling multiple times, authorities said.

Responders arrived and found five people had been traveling in the vehicle, including three children.

Four people in the vehicle suffered injuries that were described as critical. One person suffered injuries described as moderate.

One of the patients had been ejected from the vehicle when it crashed.

Responders transported one patient by airlift to a hospital. The identity of the person is not known.

The other patients were transported by ground. None of the people involved in the crash have been identified; the current condition of the patients is not known.

Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened.
