A family from San Juan Capistrano made a lucky escape when firefighters rescued them from a car that was dangling over the edge of a freeway overpass near Buellton.

Firefighters rescued a mom and two daughters from the BMW that was lodged in the railing on the northbound 101, according to the California Highway Patrol officers.

All three family members were taken to a local hospital for serious injuries. The driver, identified as Kelli Lynne Groves and her eldest daughter were flown to the hospital with major injuries.

The crash occurred at about 2:40 p.m. on Thursday when a big-rig struck the BMW from behind causing the BMW to veer into the railing. The force of the impact caused the big-rig to break through the railing and crash to the ground, where it burst into flames.

The driver of the big-rig died in the wreck.

According to one news source, a group of Navy Seabees who were stuck in traffic helped the family by using a forklift they were transporting to keep it from sliding off the edge.
