A 70 year old man was struck and killed while crossing the street by a passing motorist who drove all the way home before finally notifying police of the accident Tuesday evening in El Cajon.

According to local police reports, the crash took place shortly after 6 p.m. at the intersection of Avocado Avenue and Carter Street, where the elderly man making his way across the road was hit by a southbound Toyota Camry sedan.

The driver of the vehicle, an unidentified male, then drove all the way home, leaving the man in the road. Police and ambulance teams were rushed to the scene to try to save the man, but his injuries proved too severe; he was pronounced dead on site.

Upon reaching his home, the driver then notified police of the accident through the help of an interpreter. Baffled by the situation, the police are searching for answers as to how the accident took place, and why the driver failed to stop at the scene.

“It is unclear at this point in the investigation if speed or weather conditions are contributing factors to this collision,” says El Cajon Police Lieutenant Frank La Haye. “Alcohol does not appear to be a factor at this time.” It is also unknown if the man was crossing incorrectly, or if the driver simply did not see the man as he crossed legally.

Police closed down the southbound lanes of Avocado Avenue to try to gain a better understanding of the circumstances that the led to the accident, and to allow crews to clean up the aftermath of the accident. The county coroner’s office has yet to release the identity of the elderly man who was killed, as they are still working to notify his next of kin.
