DUI Driver Rear Ends Security Patrol Car

A driver suspected of driving under the influence was arrested after crashing into the back of a security patrol car early Wednesday morning in San Diego.

According to accident reports from the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place at around 2:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near state Route 52, where a vehicle smashed into the back of a security patrol car, sending it into the center divider.

The vehicle then veered off the freeway’s right shoulder and rolled several times before coming to a stop on its roof. The driver was able to exit the vehicle after the crash, but the front seat passenger, the girlfriend of the driver, was trapped inside. Firefighters were called to the scene to cut the woman out of the wreckage, and after 15 minutes she was freed.

Both she and the security guard inside the patrol car were then quickly rushed to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

While still at the scene, the driver was administered a field sobriety test, which he prompted failed. He was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was booked into a county jail, where he will wait for his charges to be brought to court.

Once again this accident serves as a reminder to never get behind the wheel of an automobile while intoxicated. It is fortunately that no one was killed or more seriously injured in the crash.
