A head on collision between a car and a casino passenger bus left three injured, including one in danger of losing his leg, early Tuesday morning in the city of Dehesa.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash took place at approximately 6:40 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Dehesa Road, near the Sycuan Casino, where a 2008 Chrysler 300 sedan traveling west at 40-45 miles per hour drifted into oncoming lanes, and into the path of a casino bus. The 35 passenger bus was unable to avoid the much smaller sedan, and the two vehicles collided head on.

The Chrysler sedan suffered major front end damages in the collision, and its driver, a 28 year old man from the city of Alpine, remained trapped inside for more than an hour before rescue crews were able to free him. He was then airlifted to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery in an attempt to save his badly damaged leg. More information about the driver’s condition and identity has not yet been released.

Two of the nine passengers aboard the bus, all of which were employees at the casino, meanwhile suffered minor injuries and were taken to Sharp Grossman Hospital for precautionary treatment and quickly released. The driver of the bus, a 55 year old woman from El Cajon, was unhurt in the crash.

Following the accident, police shut down both directions of Dehesa Road to allow for cleanup of the accident, which lasted for nearly three hours. Investigators were also called to the scene to determine what may have caused the Chrysler sedan to drift into oncoming lanes. Based on evidence found at the scene, it is believed that alcohol was a factor. By 9:35 a.m., all lanes were reopened.
