Bakersfield, CA (October 7, 2018) – A woman who suffered major injuries from a head-on collision near Meadows Field Airport on Sunday, October 7th, has died, officials said. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon on Merle Haggard Drive near Wings Way about a mile away from Meadows Field Airport. CHP reports the woman was driving her Honda sedan westbound when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into another in the opposite direction after jumping a curb. Witnesses told CHP the Honda was speeding at a high rate estimated to be 90 mph when the cars collided. The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries, authorities report. The occupant of the other vehicle, identified only as an 85-year-old man, suffered from minor injuries. Authorities are unsure if impairment was a factor in the crash. A portion of Merle Haggard Drive was closed for a few hours as CHP investigated the incident.
