A two car collision involving a police cruiser sent one person to the emergency room and cut power to more than 3,000 homes and businesses early Monday morning in Rancho Bernardo.
According to local accident reports, the crash took place just before 6 a.m. on Camino del Norte Street, just west of Interstate 15, where a sergeant from the El Cajon Police Department was making his way to work when another vehicle collided with him.
Following the impact, the two vehicles spun out of control through the street before one crashed through a utility box owned by the San Diego Gas & Electric Company, cutting power to more than 3,000 addresses.
The police sergeant was uninjured in the crash, though at least one person in the other vehicle was rushed to the emergency room after suffering injuries of an undisclosed severity. Additional information about his or her identity or condition has yet to be released.
The crash forced the shutdown of the immediate area to allow for cleanup of the accident and safe repair of the downed power box. By late morning service was restored to all but 429 customers in Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Pensaquitos, San Pasqual and the Del Dios and Lake Hodges areas, and by 1 p.m., full service was finally restored.
At this time there is little information about the cause of the crash between the two vehicles, or who may be at fault. The El Cajon Police Department will conduct a thorough investigation to better understand the circumstances and what the officer’s role in the crash may have been. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.
