Mission Viejo, CA (April 2, 2023) – In a tragic incident in Mission Viejo, a driver allegedly under the influence of drugs struck a family of three who were out for a walk, resulting in the death of their infant son. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in a Mission Viejo neighborhood.
The California Highway Patrol has identified the suspect as Daniel Patrick Lenihan, a 54-year-old resident of San Clemente. Lenihan was driving a 2017 Hyundai Sonata and has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and vehicular manslaughter.
The Ohlwiler family, consisting of Kyle Ohlwiler, 34, Hayley Ohlwiler, 31, and their 11-month-old son, Madden, were walking on the sidewalk with their son in a stroller when the Hyundai left the road and drove on the sidewalk for several hundred feet along Antonio Parkway before colliding with them.
The two adults were hospitalized for major injuries, while Madden was pronounced dead at the hospital. A GoFundMe has been set up to support the Ohlwilers. Lenihan is currently in the Orange County Jail and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.
