A devastating crash on the 55 freeway led authorities to cut a man out of his vehicle and airlift him to a nearby hospital on Friday afternoon.

The car accident occurred around 4 p.m. on the southbound 55, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At least two vehicles were reportedly involved.

Fire crews cut the driver out of the van before airlifting him to a local trauma center. All the other occupants of the other vehicles were either treated on the scene or uninjured.

The northbound and southbound lanes of the 55 were closed as the helicopter landed to remove the man, which caused delays of up to an hour.
