Woman Struck Crossing Street

A woman was seriously hurt after being struck by a vehicle attempting to cross the street Wednesday night in Santa Ana.

According to Santa Ana police, the accident took place at about 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Bristol Street and West Park Lane, where the woman, said to be in her 30s attempted to make her way across the northbound lanes of Bristol and was hit.

The driver who hit the woman stopped after the accident and stayed with her until paramedics arrived and took her to a nearby hospital, where she is listed in critical condition, having suffered serious injuries in the collision.

At this time, there is no official word on who was at fault in the accident, and investigators are hard at work to determine who had the right-of-way at the time of the crash. No citations or arrests have been made yet. It is unclear if the crash took place inside a marked crosswalk, or if the woman was jaywalking when hit.

Residents in the area sympathized with the woman, but note that pedestrians too often make dangerous crossings. “I sympathize with the woman who got hit but there seems to be a disproportionate number of pedestrians in Santa Ana willing to play ‘chicken’ with moving vehicles,” said one commenter.

“The pedestrian notion of who has right of way needs to be considered against the consequences of getting hit. I would rather live than give my family someone to sue because they were drunk or just didn’t see me.”
