The holidays are almost here, and AA Accident Attorneys wishes you the best this winter season. We know that things can be hectic and wanted to pass along some useful information and tips to keep you safe. It is a little known fact that the transition between Fall and Winter Seasons’ is the most deadly. Accident rates nearly double during these seasons, and with reason.

According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis the 4 most deadly days in the year are July 4, July 3, December 23, and December 24, while the 3 most deadly consecutive days are December 22-25. This comes as no surprise as the winter holidays can become quite busy and dangerous.

Driving in conditions such as rain, sleet, hail, snow, or fog increases the probability of any accident. However there are some tips to arrive at your destination safe and sound.

  • If the roads have been dry for a long period of time they are often more slick when rain pours down. This is because excess leakage from engine oil and grease settle in the concrete and rise to the surface during rainfall. However, the rain will eventually wash it away.
  • Drive Slower. Speed Limits are suggestions for “normal” driving conditions, and should be lowered in more extreme weather conditions. You should always allow yourself more time to reach your destination, so plan ahead!
  • Turn off Cruise Control. There is a chance the car will accelerate during a hydroplane. This is because the on-board computer tries to keep a constant speed, resulting in acceleration when hydroplaning. Needless to say, it is not the best choice for weather that demands your attention.
  • If hydroplaning occurs, don’t brake or turn the wheel suddenly. Instead release the gas and steer straight. Refrain from using brakes unless it is absolutely required in your situation.
  • Increase the distance between vehicles in front of you, especially larger vehicles as they have a larger tire splash which could block vision completely.
  • Brake earlier and softer. This allows cars behind you to see your slowing down and brake accordingly.
  • Keep an eye out for pedestrians. Pedestrians often are more distracted or concerned with the weather conditions.
  • Turn your headlights on. Not only does this allow other drivers to see better, but it allows you to see slightly better as well. Since the rain obscures sound from the outside, visual cues are very important. Always be sure to use turn signals properly .
  • Defog/Defrost your windows to increase overall visibility. Most cars will automatically turn the A/C on to control humidity inside. Be properly set temperatures to allow best defogging or defrosting.
  • Always carry an emergency kit. You never know when it may come handy.
