Late Wednesday morning, a rear-end collision on the 57 Freeway in Orange County caused a series of crashes that wound up affecting 5 vehicles. Around 10:30 a.m. on January 4, 2012, multiple collisions happened a little north of Ball Road, and injured 7 seven people.

As reported in The Orange County Register, California Highway Patrol officer John Patterson stated the initial crash happened when a driver in a Ford pickup moved from the number 4 lane to the number 5 lane, and rear-ended a GMC SUV. Patterson stated that traffic in the number 5 lane, which becomes the Ball Road off-ramp, was moving slowly when the collision happened. The first rear-end crash shoved the GMC into the rear end of a gray Honda Accord. The Honda swerved to the left across traffic lanes and hit a silver Honda Accord on the side that had been traveling in the number 1 lane.

A Nissan then rear-ended the gray Honda Accord, Patterson said in The Register’s news story. Traffic was severely impacted by the accidents, and had backed up as a result. All southbound traffic lanes were closed, at one point. Some drivers had exited their vehicles and were waiting near their cars while traffic was stopped. The Register reports that other drivers were making U-turns in the southbound lanes to head northbound. Originally, it was reported that responders took 8 people to the hospital, and 4 other people had minor injuries. The investigation is continuing.
