An officer from the Manhattan Beach Police Department was hospitalized for the injuries he sustained in an accident Thursday morning in Manhattan Beach.

According to crash investigators, the officer involved was in the midst of responding to an urgent call when he smashed into an SUV at the intersection of 9th Street and Sepulveda Boulevard early in the morning.

The collision sent the policeman to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, where he is still listed in critical condition. The female driver of the SUV was transported to the hospital as well, though only as a precautionary measure, as her injuries were rather insignificant.

The crash forced the closure of Sepulveda between Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Artesia to allow for cleanup. The two vehicles came to rest on opposite sides of the road, broken down and incapacitated.

There were bits of metal and plastic debris scattered across all lanes, and both vehicles had serious damage to their front ends, with the police cruisers left front portion being totally smashed in, and the SUVs right front reduced to an accordion.

At this time, there are no indications as to what caused the accident. Investigators are looking into the scene to try to determine what lead to the collision, and which vehicle was at fault. It is not known if the police cruise had its emergency lights flashing as it ran through a red light at the time.

Whoever is found to be at fault in the accident, it is important to always be attentive for emergency sirens while driving. If you hear the bellow of such a siren, especially near an intersection, you must take extra precaution to watch out for emergency vehicles potentially speeding through the area, even against a red light.
