Number One Cause of Death for U.S. Teens is Auto Accidents
A new study reveals that the Number One killer of U.S. teens is auto accidents. Auto accidents kill the same number of drivers as passengers. Auto accidents kill more teens than homicide or suicide.
The report, sponsored by General Motors, surveyed 1000 teens.
Over two thousand teens died on the roads in 2012. Of those, more than half were drivers. A little under that number were passengers. The majority of those killed were not wearing seat belts.
Talking and texting on the phone was cited as a probable cause of many of the accidents. Both adult and teens who were driving were said to talk and text on the phone.
A small number of those responding said they rode in a car in which the driver was drinking.
Just under 200 teen died in 2012 as a result of homicide. Under that number took their own lives.

he report has gained validity from other reports reaching the same conclusions.
National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reached similar conclusions. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reached similar conclusions.
All studies reported that teen deaths from auto accidents had decreased since 2012.
