Motorcyclist Killed Leaving Crash Site

A motorcyclist was killed attempting to reach the side of the road after an accident on Interstate 805 late Wednesday night in San Diego.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision took place at 11:44 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the freeway near the Home Avenue exit, the site of an accident involving a vehicle which lost its front wheel, causing a sudden stop and traffic to build up behind it.

Amidst the slowdown of traffic, a speeding motorcycle rear ended another vehicle, lost control, and crashed a short distance away.

The rider, who was relatively unhurt in the crash, then tried to make his way to the shoulder of the freeway, but was hit by another vehicle. The force of the impact sent the man into the air, almost 35 feet down the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics who responded to the scene.

The accident, which now featured a vehicle without a front wheel, another with rear end damage, and a downed motorcyclist, forced the closure of all but one lane for several hours as crews worked to clear the road. All lanes were finally reopened by 4:15 a.m., more than 5 hours later.

At this time there is little available information on the vehicle that hit the motorcyclist. Police are currently conducting a thorough investigation of the scene to fully determine the causes, and how was at fault.

The identity of the rider has not yet been released, as the county coroner’s office is still in the process of locating and notifying his next of kin.
