Roller Skaterer Killed in Fatal Car Accident

A woman on roller-skates was killed Tuesday morning after an accident that shut down a Makakilo road. Hours after Makakilo Drive re-opened, all that remains at the scene is some shattered glass in the roadway and a flower bouquet with the message “Rest in Love”.

The victim has not been identified, but officials confirm she was 27 years-old. Around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Honolulu police say the woman was roller-skating down Kikaha Street as a car was traveling makai down Makakilo Drive when they collided.

“It looks like she was falling as she got towards the intersection, because she was hit right in the intersection. So it looks like she was going to fall — trying to take the fall — to stop when she was hit by the car,” said Lt. Carlene Lau, a HPD Traffic Division spokeswoman.

Officers say it’s not clear whether she ran into the car or if the car, driven by a 54-year-old woman from the area, hit her. They say it is not legal to roller-skate in the road.

“She was not in the crosswalk. Witnesses say that it looked like she was skating out of control, maybe going too fast in the roadway,” said Lt. Lau.

Residents say Makakilo Drive is a problem spot, especially with skate boarders.

“It was just a matter of time before somebody got hit from skateboarding — or roller-skates, that was a big surprise. I’ve never seen anybody on roller-skates,” said area resident, Bill Larger.

Even though Makakilo Drive is a four-lane roadway, the speed limit is only 25 mph. The accident is still under investigation but according to HPD, officers on the scene do not suspect speeding or alcohol are to blame. Officials also don’t believe visibility was an issue.

Honolulu Police say this was the third traffic fatality of the year, and the second involving a pedestrian.
