Elderly Driver Injures 14 in Crosswalk Accident

14 people, including 11 children, were injured after a 100-year-old man backed his car into a group of pedestrians waiting to cross the street Thursday afternoon in South Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, chaos occurred in front of Main Street Elementary School, where 100-year-old Preston Carter accidentally backed his Cadillac into a group of students and parents waiting to cross the street after school.

Fortunately, despite the accident sending books, papers, and small children everywhere, most of the injuries were minor, and just two of the 14 hit remain hospitalized, where they are listed in stable condition.

Carter has said that a failure of his vehicle’s brakes was the cause of the accident, which is now under a thorough investigation by the LAPD.

“That’s the primary issue for us right now, because the gentleman made the assertion that he had some kind of mechanical failure,” says Deputy John Meneses of the LAPD’s Central Traffic Division, who believed that his investigation could take weeks to complete.

The next step in the process, says Meneses, is to interview each of the victims and other witnesses, and examine data from analysis of the man’s vehicle.

Ella Fleming, Carter’s 78 year old daughter, has come out and announced that her father will not be driving anymore, and that he plans to give the car away to another member of the family. “I’m sorry that it happened, said Ella, “and I’m thanking God none of them died.”

Despite the accident and his advanced age, Preston Carter still possesses a valid driver’s license, and has no history of traffic violations, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
