Big Rig Accident Traps Driver inside Wrecked SUV

A late morning accident between a big rig and Jeep left the SUV trapped and unconscious after the vehicle rolled onto its roof Monday morning in Orange County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident took place just after 10:20 am in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the 22 Freeway where witnesses say the Jeep SUV crashed into a big rig, causing the vehicle to roll.

Upon their arrival at the scene, accident responders found the 60 year old driver of the Jeep still strapped into the driver’s seat, unconscious but breathing.

Firefighters were able to cut the man from his seatbelt and pull him from the overturned vehicle, at which time he was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

There is no word on any other injuries or vehicles involved in the accident. The driver of the big rig that may have been involved in the crash was not hurt.

The accident forced the closure of the transition road between the 5 and 22 freeways as crews worked to clear the ruined Jeep from the scene. The SUV was all but destroyed in the crash, with its roof entirely caved in and the wheel bent inward. The road was reopened after a relatively short closure of just about an hour.

At this time there is little information about the circumstances that led to the accident. Police are launching a thorough investigation into what may have been at play and who may have been at fault.
