Lincoln, CA (October 9, 2018) – One person was killed and five others injured Tuesday evening, October 9th, in a series of collisions on Highway 65 near Wise Road, officials said. California Highway Patrol reports that the incident occurred just before 7 p.m. with three vehicles, including a tractor-trailer.

A Nissan Altima was traveling northbound on Highway 65 when for unknown reasons the driver veered into the opposing southbound lane, CHP said. The Nissan collided head-on with a Freightliner tractor-trailer, which was driven by a 40-year-old Citrus Heights man. The impact sent the Nissan tumbling down an embankment where it sparked a grass fire along the shoulder of the highway. At the same time, the driver of a Toyota FJ Cruiser, an unnamed 22-year-old Roseville woman, swerved to avoid the crash and overturned on the roadway, CHP said. The resulting fire from the Nissan burned across 1.5 acres, and was put out in less than an hour by Cal Fire officials.

The driver of the Nissan died at the scene, while the other two involved drivers were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, authorities said. Officials are uncertain if impairment was a factor in the crash. The northbound lanes of Highway 65 were closed for four hours while cleanup and investigations were underway.
