Sylmar, CA (July 17, 2019) – California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal big rig collision that left 1 person dead and another seriously injured on the 5 Freeway in Sylmar, a city in the San Fernando Valley. The fatal collision was reported to CHP sometime around 11:45 P.M. Wednesday evening. According to authorities, the big rig was traveling southbound when it struck a bridge support column in the unincorporated Santa Suzana Mountains near Sylmar. The force of the impact caused the trailer of the big rig to move forward and trapped the driver and passenger who were in the big rig cab. First responders arrived and pronounced the driver dead at the scene. The passenger was extricated from the cab and transported to a nearby hospital where they were listed in serious condition according to medical staff. CalTrans was out to assess the structural stability of the affected column that supports an overpass. As of 4:45 A.M. only the far right lane remained open to traffic.
