On Wednesday afternoon, a bicyclist died after a sport-utility vehicle hit him in the College Area of San Diego, police said, according to a news story by The San Diego Union-Tribune.  The accident occurred around 3:34 p.m. on April 18, 2012 on Montezuma Avenue near Collwood Boulevard.

The Union-Tribune reports that the driver of the SUV and the man riding the bicycle were both traveling east on Montezuma. The man on the bicycle was traveling in the bike lane when the SUV hit him from behind, San Diego police Lt. Andra Brown said in The Union-Tribune story. The man on the bicycle was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Lt. Brown, neither speed nor alcohol played a role in the accident. The SUV driver is a man in his late 30s, Lt. Brown said.

The accident is under investigation.
