Four high school students were seriously injured after their vehicle drifted into oncoming lanes and sideswiped a fast approaching vehicle Wednesday afternoon in Poway.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash took place shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Twin Peaks Road near Community Road, where the four students, ages 15 to 17, were driving their green Ford Escort in the westbound lanes when they somehow listed over into the eastbound lanes and struck an oncoming Ford F-150 truck.

The collision between the two vehicles was so severe that one of the doors from the small Escort sedan was wedged into the front grill of the much larger truck. San Diego firefighters were needed on the scene to cut the roof off the vehicle to get the students out.

The 17 year old driver of the Escort and his brother, Matt and Mike Bryant, suffered serious head trauma and were airlifted to Scripps La Jolla Hospital. The other two teens on board, Christian Islay and Joey Castellos, were taken to another nearby hospital by ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Ford F-150 and her 12 year old sister were also taken to Palomar Hospital with only minor injuries.

The accident forced the closure of all eastbound lanes of Twin Peaks Road as the Escort, which was totally destroyed in the accident and subsequent rescue efforts from firefighters, was dragged away from the scene and investigators looked into what may have caused the crash.

Witnesses to the crash believe that the driver may have been distracted at the time. “Today, the kids have phones, passengers, iPod, video games in cars… TVs are in cars these days so it’s a much bigger danger,” says Marcus Dukes, a resident living nearby.
