4 Killed, 3 Injured as SUV Falls from Freeway Overpass

A tragic accident took four lives and seriously injured three others after an SUV rolled off the side of the 134 Freeway onto the street below Sunday evening in Eagle Rock.

The accident was reported just before 6:50 p.m. along the eastbound lanes of the freeway just west of Figueroa Street where a 1999 Ford Expedition was traveling in the carpool lane at normal speeds, about 65 miles per hour, when the vehicle suddenly lost control, hit a raised asphalt curb on the left side of the road, which caused the SUV to roll.

The vehicle continued to roll all the way over the edge of the center divider guardrail, down onto North Figueroa Street, almost 36 below. It continued to roll after the fall until finally coming to a stop along the ride side of the road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, witnesses on the scene believed that the initial loss of control from the SUV was caused by an issue with the tires, possibly a blowout.

The driver and two other passengers inside the Expedition suffered fatal injuries, and were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth passenger also died later in a nearby hospital.

Two other passengers, including a young girl who was ejected from the SUV during its initial roll on the 134 Freeway, were also sent to the hospital, where they are listed in critical condition.

Two other vehicles were also indirectly involved in the crash, as they were hit from debris falling from the freeway above, which resulted in an injury for one the drivers.

The names of each of the victims in the crash, all residents of La Puente, have not yet been released, as the county coroner’s office is working to notify their families.

The accident forced the closure of all lanes of the 134 east Freeway, along with multiple lanes of North Figueroa while crews worked to extricate the victims from the scene and clean up the debris which was scattered across the roads. All lanes were finally reopened by 9 p.m.

A thorough police investigation is currently ongoing to fully understand the causes of the accident, and to determine if there were other factors in play aside from a failure in the SUV’s tires.
