California Highway Patrol officers came across the first crash at about 1 a.m. at a business near Victoria Avenue south of Doris Avenue. When they arrived the vehicle was wrecked against a fence at the business.

Emanuel Castillo, a 22-year-old from San Leandro was found unresponsive at the scene. He was the sole occupant.

When emergency responders arrived, they declared him dead.

A preliminary investigation by detectives suggests that according to evidence, Castillo was driving at a high rate of speed inside a Chevrolet Camaro southbound on Victoria. Then, as he made an attempt to change lanes near Doris, he lost control of the vehicle. It sideswiped another vehicle, veered right, went off the road and struck the fence.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit was uninjured and suffered only a scare.

On Monday an autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Castillo, Armando Chaves, a senior deputy Ventura County medical examiner told VCStar.

A little over an hour later, a second crash occurred less than three miles away from the first crash.

Officials responded to the second accident at about 2:20 a.m. A 25-year-old Oxnard man had been struck by a Toyota pickup truck at the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Wooley Road.

He was crossing the street when the truck struck him. He too was declared dead at the scene.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the pedestrian until the kin are notified of his death.

Initial reports seem to indicate that the pedestrian may have attempted to cross west on Wooley Road against a red light. The pickup, traveling south on Harbor, then hit him. His autopsy is scheduled for Monday as well.

Sgt. Brian Woolley told the publication that they are examining if alcohol intake or drugs were a factor in the crash. The driver of the truck, a 34-year-old man from Port Hueneme was questioned and evaluated for alcohol intoxication but was later released.

It is still unknown if either of the accidents involved intoxication of any kind.
