Two big-rig crashes on northbound I-5 near Williams caused traffic problems Thursday morning. In the first accident, a big rig lost control and flipped on its top around 5:20 a.m. on January 5, 2012 a little north of Delevan Road, the Colusa County Sun Herald reports.  Three hours later, a big-rig driver who was trying to avoid traffic that was slowing near the crash site also crashed when one of the two flatbed trailers he was pulling overturned.

Neither driver was hurt in the crashes. For seven hours, the right-hand lane of northbound I-5 was closed, and for a short while, both lanes of northbound traffic were closed, the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to the Sun Herald’s story, Justin Puccinelli was driving a 2007 Freightliner and was trying to pass another big-rig, the CHP stated. For reasons that are not known, Puccinelli’s truck swerved onto the center divider. When he pulled back onto the freeway, his truck spun 180 degrees and flipped over, the Sun Herald reports.

The flipped truck landed on its top. The crashed big-rig partly blocked the right lane of I-5 and the Delevan Road onramp, according to CHP. The big-rig’s driver had minor injuries and did not go to the hospital. The overturned big-rig spilled aluminum sheets, diesel fuel, motor oil and coolant.

As the clean-up was nearly complete, another Freightliner approached slowing traffic. Jason Simmons, who was driving the big-rig pulling two flatbed trailers, swerved into the still closed right lane to avoid hitting cars. The move caused his rear trailer to flip on its side, CHP stated in the Sun Herald’s story. The second crashed big-rig continued travelling for a short distance until it stopped in the right lane.
