Willow Creek, CA (October 6, 2018) – A serious crash left the passenger of a van dead and others with serious injuries Saturday, October 6th, the California Highway Patrol said. The accident occurred that morning just before 6 a.m., when the driver of a 1999 Ford F350, identified as 63-year-old Mark Lindley of Eureka, was traveling east on State Route 299 when he lost control of the vehicle due to slick road conditions. The truck veered into oncoming traffic in the opposite lane, striking a Dodge Caravan head-on, police said. Emergency responders found one passenger of the Dodge van dead at the scene. The other two occupants of the Caravan, including 47-year-old driver Kevin McConnell and 77-year-old Gwendolyn Vanpelt both of Hoopa, suffered serious injuries and were transferred to a local hospital. Lindley and his passenger, 48-year-old Jason Lawrence of Bayside, were assessed without injury, according to CHP. Humboldt CHP continues to investigate the crash, but do not believe impairment to be a factor. Authorities warn drivers to be wary of adverse road conditions with the arrival of rainfall in fall.
